Ford Tilt Column Install
|
Note: Some body shops or Ford do it
your selfers prefer to take the body off the frame
to install the floors, my suggestion
is, DON'T DO IT! I prefer to leave the car on the frame
to keep the body from flexing.
Also, replace the floors one side at a time. Doing it this way gives you
a better reference point as to the placement of the new sheet metal and
again keeps flexing at a minimum. After you install the floors
you can take the body off the frame if a frame off resto is what you want
to do. With some patience, the results should be well worth the time and
effort spent doing it this way

I laid the new floor pans on top
of the old rusted floors, drew my cut lines, and made my cuts.
I made the cut on the trans hump
1/2
inch lower than the drawn line to make sure the cut
was not to high. That worked out
to be just right for a perfect fit.

After cutting the floors out around
braces, I took a hammer and sharp chisel to break loose
the spot welds, then removed the
remaining sections from the floor braces. Doing this by
hand is harder and takes more time
than using a air hammer, but it keeps you from
tearing up the floor braces.

With a little patience the results are rewarding.

Rear floor and toe board braces.

|
This is not a frame off resto...it's
going to be a high quality driver.
I cleaned up the frame and braces
and applied POR-15.

Before and after POR-15 application.

Fitting the floors....notice I've already repaired the rocker.
|
|
|
Fitted... then welded in place.
To get a tight fit I used a floor
jack
and raised the floor until the seams
were tight.
Before you jack up the floor, make
sure
you have tack welded the floors
on three
( back, rocker,
and trans tunnel )
sides before welding the center
seam.

|
Rear passenger side view......notice how tight the seam is.
Time for the drivers side.
|
|
|
Messy!
|
|
|
More of the same!... Cut out part of rocker.
|
|
|
Cutting and removing section of inner
rocker.
Support rocker with jack to keep
the rocker from bending while your
removing inner rocker.

|
Inner rocker cut out... new hand made piece being fitted.

Another view of rocker... fitting new floors.

|
|
Fitting rear floor pan....got these
10 way power seats and couldn't wait to
modify the floor mounts and do a
trial install.
Who am I trying to kid when I'm
telling you guys to be patient!
